For the Younger Set:
Here are the books my boys loved when they were just wee ones. The first list is from the FIVE IN A ROW curriculum. If you haven't yet established the habit of reading aloud to your children, this is the best way to get started. You read the same book for five days in a row. Sounds boring and repetitive, right? Well, it isn't. You'd be surprised how much you can glean from a book after a few readings! These books bring back warm, wonderful memories of our first years homeschooling. But, you don't have to be a home schooling family to enjoy Five In A Row. These were our favorites:
The Story About Ping - Flack, Marjorie (Great memories of this one.)
The Rag Coat - Mills, Lauren
The Glorious Flight - Provensen, Alice
Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel - Burton, Virginia Lee
Night of the Moonjellies - Shasha, Mark (Wow! We had a ball with this book!!)
Three Names - MacLachlan, Patricia
Owl Moon - Yolen, Jane
Mirette on the High Wire - McCully, Emily
They Were Strong and Good - Lawson, Robert and Alice
Make Way for Ducklings - McCloskey, Robert (Oh man, I could get weepy here...this was a precious book. They grow up WAY too fast.)
Miss Rumphius - Cooney, Barbara
The Little Red Light House and the Great Gray Bridge - Swift, Hidegarde
Our other Miscellaneous Favorites for Wee Ones.
The Little House - Burton, Virginia
Frog and Toad Series - Lobel, Arnold
Billy and Blaze Books - Anderson, C.W.
Blueberries for Sal - McCloskey, Robert
The Biggest Bear - Ward, Lynd
The Egg - Robertson, M. P.
Marguerite Writes a Book - Robertson, Bruce
James Harriot's Treasury for Children - Harriot, James
Winnie the Pooh Collection - Milne, A. A.
A Grain of Rice - Demi
Sword in the Tree - Demi
Horton Hatches the Egg - Suess
Wisdom and the Millers - Martin, Mildred (These are very, very conservative Mennonite stories. We used these as bedtime or breakfast devotions.)
Story Time With the Millers - Martin, Mildred
Prudence and the Millers - Martin, Mildred
School Days with the Millers - Martin, Mildred
Missionary Stories with the Millers - Martin, Mildred
I'll add more as I remember. All our books for younger children are packed so I'm doing this from memory.
As They Get Older:
Trailblazer Books - Jackson, Dave and Neta (Historical fiction missionary stories)
Christian Heroes Then and Now - Benge, Geoff and Janet (Missionary and American hero biographies)
Swiss Family Robinson
Railway Children - Nesbit, E.

Fantastic list! We're doing FIAR now and will be adding longer read-alouds this month, so this list is very helpful.
